Another huge reason aqua-varnish stands out is because it's eco-friendly. It is water-based, unlike solvent-based coatings, and releases no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), so it is safer for workers and the environment. It's odorless and non-toxic, so it's a favorite among food packaging, such as cereal boxes or bakery boxes, where safety is paramount. As consumers and brands start demanding more environmentally friendly practices, aqua-varnish is well-suited. It's recyclable and free from plastic waste, unlike plastic lamination films. Additionally, its quick-drying property means less energy consumption during processing, further reducing its carbon footprint.
Cost-effectiveness is the cherry on top. Aqua-varnish is applied inline during the printing process. Meaning it's incorporated without additional steps. Such efficiency reduces production time and labor costs over offline treatments such as UV or conventional varnish. It's less expensive than lamination, also a good choice for high-volume applications such as magazines, flyers, boxes and many other daily-use applications. For small businesses or startup companies, this equates to professional-quality finishes at reasonable prices. The versatility to apply it as a flood coating (covering the entire sheet) or spot coating (accenting certain areas) provides creative freedom without raising significant costs.
Aqua-varnish also gets along well with contemporary printing technologies like offset printing and traditional screen printing methods. BOPP Lamination is heavy-duty but bulky, expensive, and wasteful in terms of plastic (although it has it's advantages). Aqua-varnish finds a middle ground: it's flexible, eco-friendly, and budget-friendly but still provides solid protection and aesthetics. It won't hold up to harsh environments like lamination, but for most paper applications—brochures, packaging, or labels—comes close to being too much.
The quick-drying characteristic of the coating is a silent hero. Since it evaporates water rather than chemicals, it dries rapidly, hastening production. This is a dead-end saver for deadlines, such as when a company requires thousands of product inserts immediately. It also minimizes the problem of sheets adhering to each other, a typical issue with slower-drying coatings. Printers can transition from printing to cutting or folding nearly instantaneously, enhancing the workflow and bringing products to market more quickly.
Aqua-varnish isn’t perfect, though. It’s not waterproof, so it’s not suited for items exposed to constant water, like outdoor signage. Certain products, like cosmetics packaging, may have chemicals that interfere with adhesion, requiring careful testing.
